How the AI Try-On works.
Last updated: August 14, 2026
The "Try a New Look" button on our home page lets you preview a haircut style on your own photo using AI. We built it to be useful, not creepy. Here's exactly what happens – what we send, where it goes, what we keep, and what to expect.
What you do
- You click "Try a New Look" and a small modal opens.
- You upload a clear, well-lit photo of yourself looking forward.
- You choose styles and request a preview. A public preview batch contains no more than five generated images.
- You compare the results and choose the style you like.
- You may save the image to your device. You may also voluntarily enter your phone number so the selected result can be available to the shop for your visit.
What happens behind the scenes
- Your browser sends the photo over an encrypted HTTPS connection to the Dapper Fellas Mirror service hosted on our secured server.
- The service checks the image, enforces usage limits, and sends the photo plus your selected style to our configured AI image-processing provider.
- The provider processes the request with the gpt-image-2 image model and returns the generated preview to our server.
- The Mirror service returns the preview to your browser and temporarily stores session media so the preview flow and shop retrieval can work.
Data handling, in detail
- Original photo and unselected previews: automatically deleted from our Mirror database within 24 hours.
- Selected result: if you voluntarily save a chosen style with your phone number, the selected image is kept for up to 180 days so the shop can retrieve it for your visit. It may be deleted sooner if you ask us to delete it.
- Phone number: used to find the saved result for the guest and, when available, connect the visit with the shop's Altegio client record. It is not sent to PostHog.
- Usage analytics: we record events such as opening the Try-On, generating, selecting, saving, booking clicks, limits, and errors. Analytics contain the access channel, an opaque device identifier, and a one-way keyed hash for an identified save. They do not contain raw phone numbers or photos and are retained for up to 36 months.
- Training: Dapper Fellas does not use your photo to train an AI model. The image-processing provider handles the request under its own terms and privacy policy.
What the preview is — and isn't
The preview is a creative visualization: a photorealistic suggestion of how a style might look on your face shape and hair pattern, generated by an AI model. It is not:
- A guarantee that the real cut will look identical. Real hair growth, density, and cowlicks behave differently than pixels.
- A medical or dermatological assessment.
- A binding commitment to deliver that exact result in the chair. Your barber will work with you to land the closest real-world version.
Use it as a conversation starter – bring the saved image to your appointment, talk it through with your barber, and we'll calibrate from there.
Limits and rate
The Try-On feature is free to guests. Public access is capped at 10 generated result images per device per day, with no more than five images in one preview batch. A kiosk session is capped at 10 images. The service also has a global safety cap of 100 generated images per day. Limits may be reduced temporarily to control abuse, cost, or service availability.
What you should not upload
- Photos of someone other than yourself, unless they've given consent.
- Photos of minors without parental consent.
- Photos containing illegal or harmful content. The underlying model rejects most of this automatically.
- Photos you don't want processed by a third-party AI provider – in that case, simply don't use the feature. Booking and visiting work the same without it.
Opting out and questions
The Try-On is opt-in. You can use the rest of the Site (booking, services, location, reviews) without ever clicking it. If you'd like to know more about how a specific generation was processed, or you want to request deletion, email dapperfellas@yahoo.com – we'll respond within 30 days.
Provider chain – for the curious
- Dapper Fellas Mirror – receives the encrypted request, enforces limits, stores temporary session media, and returns the preview.
- GRSAI – the primary configured image-processing provider.
- fal.ai – the configured backup provider and the provider used for some preview or angle-generation paths.
- gpt-image-2 – the image model used to generate the hairstyle preview.
Changes
If we change the provider chain or the data handling, we'll update this page and bump the "Last updated" date. Material changes that affect what happens to your photo will be flagged in the Try-On modal itself before you upload.
